The calculation, explained

Formula and worked example

Pip value = lots × units per lot × pip size ÷ conversion rate

For 0.10 lot of EUR/USD at 100,000 units per lot, the position is 10,000 EUR. A 0.0001 move is USD 1.00 per pip. In a GBP account, using a hypothetical rate of 1 GBP = 1.25 USD, that is GBP 0.80 per pip.

Conversion rate means quote-currency units per 1 account-currency unit. Divide by that rate. For example, USD 10 ÷ 1.25 USD per GBP = GBP 8. Matching account and quote currencies use a rate of 1.

For yen pairs, follow the worked USD/JPY and GBP/JPY pip-value examples.

Common questions

Why does USD/JPY have a different pip size?

This tool uses the conventional 0.01 pip for JPY-quoted pairs. At 100,000 units per lot, a full lot changes by JPY 1,000 per pip. At an illustrative 150 JPY per USD, that is about USD 6.666667 per pip.

Does pip value stay constant?

It stays constant in the quote currency for a fixed position, but its account-currency value can change with the conversion rate.
