JPY Pip Values: USD/JPY and GBP/JPY Examples
Calculate JPY-pair pip values from trade units, then convert the result into your account currency. Worked examples explain pips, pipettes and conversion direction.
A pip on these JPY pairs is 0.01
For USD/JPY or GBP/JPY, a move from 150.00 to 150.01 or from 190.00 to 190.01 is one pip under the convention used by our tools. A third decimal digit is a pipette: ten pipettes make one pip. These are illustrative prices, not market quotes.
A pip is a price change, not a fixed cash amount. The cash value depends on how many units you hold. It is calculated in JPY first, because JPY is the second, or quote, currency in both pairs.
JPY value per pip = base-currency units × 0.01
Account-currency value = JPY value ÷ JPY per 1 account-currency unit
USD/JPY: 0.10 lot in a USD account
Assume 100,000 base-currency units per lot. At 0.10 lot you hold 10,000 USD of exposure. Each pip changes the quote-currency result by 10,000 × 0.01 = JPY 100.
Using an illustrative conversion of 1 USD = JPY 150, divide JPY 100 by 150: approximately USD 0.666667 per pip. A 30-pip adverse move is JPY 3,000, or USD 20 at that same conversion rate, before costs.
The account-currency result can change if the conversion rate changes. For an exact closing example, use the appropriate exit conversion assumption. For sizing before a trade, treat the conversion as an assumption and allow for the fact it can move.
GBP/JPY: the account currency matters
At 100,000 units per lot, 0.10 lot of GBP/JPY represents 10,000 GBP. One pip is still JPY 100. In a GBP account, at an illustrative JPY 190 per GBP, that is about GBP 0.526316 per pip.
In a USD account, you instead need JPY per USD. If that rate is 150, divide the same JPY 100 by 150 to get about USD 0.666667. The GBP/JPY price alone does not tell you the JPY-to-USD conversion.
This is why our calculator labels the required conversion direction explicitly and clears the rate when you change the pair or account currency.
Three common mistakes
- Entering platform points as pips. A 300-point move on a three-decimal JPY quote is normally 30 pips under this convention, not 300.
- Multiplying by the conversion rate. If the field says JPY per 1 USD, divide the JPY amount by that number to obtain USD.
- Assuming every position is one standard lot. Confirm contract size and multiply by the actual lot amount or units. Some platforms accept units directly.
Pip value does not establish a suitable risk percentage or check margin. Use the position-size calculator to examine a chosen risk budget and read the position-sizing guide for the method and limits.
