The calculation, explained

Formula and worked example

Long gross P/L = (exit − entry) × lots × units per lot ÷ conversion rate

A hypothetical 0.10-lot EUR/USD long from 1.1000 to 1.1050, with 100,000 units per lot, gains 50 pips or USD 50 gross. Deducting USD 7 in cash costs leaves USD 43. A short at the same entry and exit loses USD 50 gross and USD 57 after those costs.

Conversion rate means quote-currency units per 1 account-currency unit. Divide by that rate. For example, USD 10 ÷ 1.25 USD per GBP = GBP 8. Matching account and quote currencies use a rate of 1.

The day trading, swing trading and scalping cost comparison shows why the same charge can consume very different proportions of a planned move. For a complete hypothetical entry-to-exit example, read the breakout strategy worked calculation.

Compare the result with the same units and costs

Use the fixed examples below the form to compare a small EUR/USD demo result, a USD/JPY short with account-currency conversion, and a GBP/USD short loss. Each loads published hypothetical inputs; changing your own inputs never changes a share link.

The EUR/USD example uses 0.01 lot at 100,000 EUR per lot, executable entry 1.1002 and exit 1.1010: 1,000 × 0.0008 = USD 0.80 gross, less USD 0.08 additional costs = USD 0.72. The fill difference already includes the spread.

For gold’s separate lot-to-ounce definition, use the XAU/USD profit calculator. To decide quantity from a stated stop-risk budget, use position sizing instead. A profitable hypothetical calculation is not evidence of a trading edge.

Common questions

Can this show a loss?

Yes. An adverse move produces a negative gross result. Costs are deducted from gains and increase losses; even a flat-price exit can lose money after costs.

Are the displayed prices live?

No. Every price and conversion rate is supplied by you. The default example is hypothetical, and changing pairs clears the entry and exit prices.
